Dear Friends, Visitors and Collectors
René Groebli's "Lying Nude,” taken in Paris in 1952, opens this week's online exhibition. It was shot during Groebli’s honeymoon with his wife Rita in a Paris hotel room where they had secluded themselves for three days. The picture is a testament to the intimacy and closeness between the newlyweds – a form of familiarity that is difficult to achieve in professional constellations between artist and model.
It is no surprise that Groebli’s “Eye of Love” series attracted the attention of Edward Steichen, American curator and photographer. Soon after founding the first photography department at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in the late 1940s, Steichen acquired the print "Sitting Nude" from that series for the museum's collection and included it in his monumental MoMA exhibition “The Family of Man” in 1955.
René Groebli’s exhibition THE MAGIC EYE was abruptly interrupted by the corona crisis. However, it is possible to take a 3D tour. As soon as we are allowed to reopen the gallery, we will extend the exhibition and add a few new discoveries from Groebli's work. Details to follow.
