FOTODOK presents A Wider Gaze, a group exhibition at Atelier Néerlandais in Paris, at the invitation of the embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in France. On view from 6 to 15 November, the exhibition opens in the lead-up to the prestigious Paris Photo fair. Through their work, the artists reflect on what it means to be European today.

A Wider Gaze brings together ten artists and photographers from diverse backgrounds who approach Europe from its many margins and entangled histories. Working across photography, installation, video, textiles and archival material, they explore themes of belonging, colonial legacies, labour and identity. These artists do not offer one story of Europe. They offer many: overlapping, sometimes contradictory, unfinished.

According to a widely cited etymology, the name “Europe” derives from the Ancient Greek eurys-ops, meaning “wide gaze”. Do we still live up to that name today? Can we keep our gaze wide enough to see beyond the clouds of conflict and recognise what Europeans still share?

Artists on view

Emilia Martin and Sanne van den Elzen explore how women’s labour, rituals and everyday practices are carried across generations. Julia Gat and Thana Faroq excavate the impact that geography, distance, memory and the longing for home can have on identity. Maite Vanhellemont and Rafael Roncato sit with the long shadows of colonialism, asking what is inherited and what is silenced. Giya Makondo-Wills and Pablo Lerma examine how Europe decides who belongs and who must prove themselves. Mark Rammers stays close to one small town to explore what it means to call a place home when everyone says it is bad for your health. Sheng-Wen Lo follows a single feather to reveal how careless consumption shapes our world.

Together, these artists foreground the blind spots and overlooked histories that shape Europe. A Wider Gaze invites visitors to draw their own connections between the works and reconsider our place in the world with fresh eyes.

Programme

A varied public programme will run alongside the exhibition, offering further context and opportunities for exchange. During TAFERELEN, FOTODOK’s in-depth public programme, artists, participants and experts come together with the audience for conversations over dinner.

From 11 to 13 November, visitors will have the opportunity to meet the artists. On 12 November, the programme also includes a photobook speed-dating session with Sugar Paper.
