IN-DEPENDANCE by IBASHO proudly presents its first group exhibition, centred around the theme The Alternative Landscape. This exhibition features ten international artists who each reinterpret the concept of landscape, challenging traditional notions by distorting, fragmenting, visualising and reconstructing it by using a wide range of materials and techniques. These works invite us to reconsider what the landscape means in our complex and constantly changing world.
Together, the artists in The Alternative Landscape question conventional perceptions of nature, offering layered perspectives that are poetic, reflective, critical and transformative.
IN-DEPENDANCE is a new gallery founded in 2024 by couple Martijn van Pieterson and Annemarie Zethof, the founders of IBASHO Gallery. Located on the Waalsekaai in Antwerp, the gallery primarily focuses on photography but also presents other forms of visual art in which materiality, craftsmanship and an understated aesthetic take centre stage. Unlike IBASHO, which is dedicated to Japanese art and photography, IN-DEPENDANCE mainly showcases the work of Western artists.
As a sister space to IBASHO, IN-DEPENDANCE functions as a multi-purpose art venue for a wide range of cultural events. In addition to representing a core group of artists, the gallery also invites artists on a project basis and collaborates with other galleries to present curated exhibitions. IN-DEPENDANCE also sells a curated range of photography books—from titles by represented artists to publications by IBASHO and the(M) éditions, alongside other carefully selected works.
