Belfast Photo Festival returns online and offline this autumn with its 2020 programme entitled XX-XY, which symbolizes women identifying and non-binary photographers.
From 4 – 30 November 2020 a thematically diverse line up of contemporary Irish photography celebrates the female gaze, reframing the world through the manifold perspectives, styles and subject matters captured by the women behind Ireland’s cameras.
It is no secret that women have been gravely underrepresented throughout art history and the masculine experience has consistently acted as a filter for how we are to see the world. Where archaic male-dominated networks have traditionally acted as the gatekeepers for the art industry, increasing numbers of diversified image-makers are revolutionising age-old narratives built on disempowerment and misrepresentation.
In a salute to this inspiring progression, XX-XY recognises both how far we’ve come and how far we’ve yet to go to achieve gender equality in the visual arts, while at the same time fostering dialogue beyond the snapshot. The images and the artists behind them shed a truly contemporary light on the pivotal role that female photographers play in the portrayal of our world, encouraging creative appreciation and understanding that transcend the boundaries of the art community. The events and exhibitions feature artistic approaches to representation, self-portraiture, landscape and fashion, as well as truthful and contemplative depictions centring around equality and the body. As well as galleries, this year’s visual arts experience will luminate major outdoor public spaces through lightboxes and large-scale outdoor projection.
