Grenze-Arsenali Fotografici, the international photographic festival, will be back for the fifth edition, organized in collaboration with Assessorato alla Cultura, Turismo e Rapporti con l’UNESCO, with involvement of Centro Internazionale di Fotografia Scavi Scaligeri and ufficio Conservazione e Valorizzazione Sito UNESCO e Cinta muraria magistrale del Comune di Verona.

For more information visit: https://www.grenzearsenalifotografici.com/

This one will take place in “Veronetta” district: it will take part at Bastione delle Maddalene and other venues of Verona starting september 1st until september 26th.

A very up-to-date theme will be covered: an analysis of fiction. Fiction as methodical doubt about alleged truth of image: “Reality is not the opposite of fiction, rather the fiction is the connection to understand reality. The fiction a methodic doubt”.

Leading the curatorship and artistic direction are Simone Azzoni (art critic and professor at IUSVE) and Francesca Marra (photographer and professor), both supported by a young and dynamic team of students and photography enthusiasts.

Authors

As well for this fifth edition, it won't be missing an important international and national component. To go through the theme of "fiction" are going to be guests coming from Japan, South Africa, Serbia, Austria, Catalonia and of course, Italy:

Locations

As a mean to commemorate its city, Grenze Arsenali Fotografici decided to host its festival around various historical venues with an eye of regard to Veronetta: one of the most lively and multiethnic neighborhoods.

Bastione delle Maddalene (“The Madeleine Bastion”) represents one of these heritages, as it constitutes a part of the imposing walls of Verona. It will host the exhibits of artists including: Amorosino, Belianska, Fontcuberta/Rosado, Petersen, Pichler, Msezane, Torras Lorca, Yokoyama and Žugić.

The artwork of Munari and Pallotta will be set up at Grenze | Galleria d’Arte Contemporanea in collaboration with Isolo17 (Via XX Settembre), while the artists Laureano and Sunday will be exhibited at Spazio Alva (Vicolo Terrà 5).

Another fascinating location which will be hosting those artists forming part of Circuito OFF is the Lazaretto di Verona (the Lazaret of Verona). It started to be built at the beginning of 1549 at the behest of the Republic of Venice and completed in 1630, just in time for the catastrophic plague wave of 1630 (Verona was the last city to be hit). Through the years its role changed: starting from the XVII century it became an ammunition deposit and kept its original architecture until two explosions razed it during the Second World War. In 1960 the central temple of the Lazaret was reconstructed and it is going to be where, next September, artists as Barp, Bruni, De Leo, Jadigwa, Rezashateri, Zancan and Zuanazzi will perform.

Eventi collaterali

What Grenze Arsenali Fotografici has in program for this year edition goes behind the exhibitions themselves: events, conferences and workshops will accompany the whole festival.

On Friday the 2nd of September, at the Civic Library (Sala Farinati) from 17:00 to 19:00 will take place the award ceremony of VIDEO ART AWARDS (VAA – Third edition), organized by Centro Luigi Di Sarro of Rome.

Always at the public library, on Saturday the 3rd of September from 11:00 to 13:00 it will take place a speech regarding the development of the imaginary. This last one will mark the closure of a cycle of conferences organized by TANK EVENTS (sponsored by Centro Internazionale Scavi Scaligeri - Comune di Verona together with Grenze Arsenali Fotografici).

To take part in this talk will be the artists: Cristina Baldacci, Moira Ricci, Paolo Schianchi and with the extraordinary participation of Pilar Rosado. To moderate the event will be Yvonne De Rosa (Magazzini Fotografici - NA).

Let’s get on with Sunday the 4th of September, a day filled of events.

From 10:00 to 12:00 at Bastione delle Maddalene, Yvonne de Rosa, Valeria Lureano and Paula

Sunday will carry out a class regarding “Reading a Portfolio”. The registration is mandatory and it costs €15. Within the same site, Michele Pascarella will lead the Workshop “Porte aperte”, an activity to train yourself to look at the world through contemporary photography. The activity will last from 9:30 until 12:30 and the registration is required at the price of €35).

From 10:00 to 12:30 outside the Bastion, Sara Pellizer will lead a workshop of cyanotype given to teenagers between 8 and 12 years old (entrance upon reservation, 12 seats available).

From 10:00 to 12:00, this green area will be shared with a series of book presentations leaded by:

  • Nicolò Bello - “Dolce Via Nova” by Charles H. Traub and edited by Lazy Dog Press
  • Nicolò Bello - “The Picture Man. In conversazione con Gusmano Cesaretti” by Stefano Lemon and edited by Lazy Dog Press
  • Valentina De Pasca - “Legarsi alla Montagna” by Maria Lai and edited by 5 Continents Editions
  • Giovanni Cecchinato who presents his book “Alemagna - Luoghi e paesaggi lungo la SS51” edited by Steve Bisson
  • Francesco Amorosino who presents his self-published book “Fantastic Voyage

At 16:00 within the same location, Vincenzo Scorza and Giovanni Motta will be discussing about NFT (non-fungible tokens). To moderate this talk will be Fabiana Bussola (editor-in-chief of Cultura di Heraldo) in collaboration with perAspera Festival.

On Friday the 9th of September at Grenze Galleria d’Arte Contemporanea, Sara Munari will present “Un’ora sul pianeta Musa”. The partner of the event is Isolo17 and it will be opened to the public for free.

On Saturday the 10th (10:00 - 18:00) and Sunday the 11th of September (10:00 - 17:00) Sara Munari will carry out a workshop regarding Street Photography: fourteen seats are available and the registration is required. It is necessary to bring a reflex or a mirrorless, but a smartphone will be also enough. This class will be taken at Scuola secondaria Valerio Catullo (Via Breccia San Giorgio 1).
