“I give you the mausoleum of all hope and desire; I give you the South.” These are the words of William Faulkner in The Sound and the Fury (1929).
In the small towns of the American South, everyday life often seems strangely absent. Streets and public spaces are largely empty; people retreat into their houses and cars.
In this Bible Belt, a region marked by strong religious traditions and deep social and racial divisions, many tensions remain hidden from view — behind closed doors, within families and communities. My photographs explore this landscape of absence, isolation and unspoken realities.

About
Jan Banning (b. 1954, the Netherlands) studied social and economic history before becoming a photographic artist. His work is shaped by both his academic background and his family's history in the former Dutch East Indies (now Indonesia), where his father and grandfather were among the millions subjected to forced labour by the Japanese military during World War II. He lives in Utrecht.
