Julie V. Garner photographs Mission District entrances, honouring the neighbourhood’s colourful character amid decades of change.

I recently moved back to the Mission District of San Francisco after living in outlying towns for the last many years. In the 1980s, my partner at the time and I had a photo studio just blocks from where I am now living, so I got to know it well.

While successive tech booms have gentrified the area, it still retains a unique character that makes it, in my opinion, the most lively and exciting place to be in the city.

I set out to both bond with and honour my neighbourhood by photographing the entrances to homes there. Stairs, gates and doorways that lead to living spaces. Known for being a colourful place, I wanted to document some of what makes the Mission unique and welcoming.

Julie V. Garner is a self-taught photographer best known for her large-scale photographic weavings of the manufactured landscape. These works are composites of many photographs collaged together through hand-weaving. A sense of place and the particular beauty of vernacular, functional architecture motivate her work. She is also an avid photographer and collage artist. Based in San Francisco, California, Garner has exhibited widely in the Bay Area, statewide, and nationally. Her work is found in both private and public collections.
